It’s hard to believe that it was just earlier this year when I photographed Logan and his cousins for some family photos. At the time, this little guy was hardly able to hold his head up on his own! And now? He’s so big that he’s wearing the same sized diapers as his cousin who’s a year older than him. My how quickly they grow.

I had the honor of documenting Logan’s dol, a Korean tradition that celebrates a child’s first birthday. Logan’s parents, Deana and Eric, outdid themselves preparing for the party, which really had something for everyone. All-you-can-eat BBQ, an open bar, a face-painter who can also make balloon animals, center-pieces made out of balloons…I mean, what else could a one-year-old ask for?

I love the expression on his face here. He really looks like he’s wondering what’s happening to him as his parents get him into his hanbok.

As part of the dol, the child is presented with a variety of items. The child is urged to pick one – Eric kept trying to get Logan to pick the money – and whatever is picked foretells the child’s future. So what did Logan pick? In the end, he decided to follow in his father’s footsteps and picked up… the baseball!

And in some exciting news, Logan recently became a big brother! Congrats Deana and Eric, and welcome to your new little one.
