I was thrilled when I got an email from Amy asking, “Time for C family?” Of course I had time for one of my first families! It’s been a while since I’ve last seen them and since then, Alex has grown into a little man and big brother – a role he is so sweet in.

It was a bit of an afterthought. No, not having a baby! That would be crazy talk. No, having maternity photos taken was the afterthought. With ten days left until their due date, Jennifer and Steve decided to document the home stretch before their new little one makes his debut.
Growing up, it’s easy to make family photos a tradition. Every year, our family would head down to Olan Mills and get ready to document how much my sister and I had grown. We’d sit for a quick studio shoot, get our prints, and voila! a new family photo would be framed and up on the mantle showing my sister’s updated perm, my overly hairsprayed visor of a bang, and my parents looking, for the most part, the same.
As adults, it’s harder to remember to take these family photos to see the not-so-apparent changes that have occurred over the years. So when Lisa emailed me a couple of months ago and told me her mother had been talking about taking family photos for a while, I thought, ehhh. Maybe. But then she mentioned a backyard BBQ afterwards and I said, wha?? Of course I would love to shoot your family photos!
Ommy and Dudley, thank you for inviting us into your world for a gorgeous evening at the beach and some of Tony’s amazing sliders afterwards. And letting us watch Cha Cha and Mambo (their two Havanese dogs) rip up your musical birthday cards – really, we need video of that on YouTube! It’s so easy to feel at home with your family and Edwin and I are honored that we could help update your mantle.
Take a look at this gorgeous family!
Another good reason for the updated Westlake family photos is that the family grew by one member last year, when Lisa and Tony were married in Cabo. Since then, these guys have made some incredible changes in their lives when they decided to travel the world for a year. In March, they left for South America and spent the last three months in Argentina and Chile. They were in town for a bit of a break and to reorganize for the next nine months of their adventure in Asia. If you’d like to read more about their experiences, you can follow their blog here. It is an amazing journey.
Happy belated one-year anniversary!
Here’s Chris, who’s a composer and has most recently been working on the music to the shorts that will be featured on the Despicable Me DVD. If you read my blog, you’ve seen him in action before.
This shot courtesy of Edwin. He complained to me that he had to start shooting in manual to get the exposure right. I had no response to that since I’ve been telling him to shoot manual for, oh, well over a year now. And see what an amazing image he produced!
We took these photos at Swami’s beach, which Chris tells me is a San Diego institution. Surfing here is supposed to be pretty amazing.
And of course, Ommy and Dudley.
Ommy claims that she doesn’t photograph well, but really Ommy? I don’t think I believe you. You are glowing!
Edwin captured this sibling interaction while I was getting the fam lined up for some more formal portraits. I love these kinds of moments.
And, this is my absolute favorite photo of the day…
