Meet Alice

Meet Alice

After some shameless plugging from my husband (oh, the powers of Facebook), I was incredibly happy to be taking family photos for a long-time friend. Anne is the older sister of Joy, who was my very first friend when I moved to California. Needless to say, I’ve known these girls for the majority of my lifetime.

As a kid, I clearly remember looking up to Anne. She was the older sister of my best friend, and she had a old-time glamour about her – which she still does. And she’s managed to pass this glamour on to her daughter. Just like her name, Alice is dainty and graceful, even as a baby. I was thrilled to meet her when Anne and Jason were home over the holidays to visit their families.

Meet Spencer

Meet Spencer

Tis the season for family holiday photos! I’ve had an unusually busy month for family photos and in the process, have had the pleasure of meeting some new little ones. Like this little man, Spencer. At a year and a half, this rugrat made a mobile subject that made me shoot extra quick in order to get him at a fleetingly still moment.

Spencer’s mom, Elizabeth, asked if we could do some family photos but in a less traditional setting than, say, in front of the family room fireplace. We ended up at the LACMA, which turned out perfect since it gave us enough room for Spencer to run around and do his thing. Like his grown-up outfit? It gets even cuter when you see what his dad is wearing.

Meet Rylan

Meet Rylan

A couple of years ago, I went to see The Kims of Comedy. I knew I was seeing a comedy show, but I didn’t expect to be so thoroughly entertained. One of the most memorable things about the show was when comedian Mike O’Connell got up on stage and started singing a ridiculous song about how cute he thinks Asian babies are and how he wants to hold one (if you’re actually interested, it’s at about the 3 min mark). Yes, I cried the first time I heard this because I found it so funny…but in my defense, Mike O’Connell was wearing a iridescent body suit and Ken Jeong was on stage with him at the time! I know, sometimes my humor may be a little strange, but I’m telling you, it really is funny.

Happy Birthday Logan!

Happy Birthday Logan!

It’s hard to believe that it was just earlier this year when I photographed Logan and his cousins for some family photos. At the time, this little guy was hardly able to hold his head up on his own! And now? He’s so big that he’s wearing the same sized diapers as his cousin who’s a year older than him. My how quickly they grow.

I had the honor of documenting Logan’s dol, a Korean tradition that celebrates a child’s first birthday. Logan’s parents, Deana and Eric, outdid themselves preparing for the party, which really had something for everyone. All-you-can-eat BBQ, an open bar, a face-painter who can also make balloon animals, center-pieces made out of balloons…I mean, what else could a one-year-old ask for?

Check out the beautiful spread…

And a gorgeous birthday cake.

I love the expression on his face here. He really looks like he’s wondering what’s happening to him as his parents get him into his hanbok.

As part of the dol, the child is presented with a variety of items. The child is urged to pick one – Eric kept trying to get Logan to pick the money – and whatever is picked foretells the child’s future. So what did Logan pick? In the end, he decided to follow in his father’s footsteps and picked up… the baseball!

And in some exciting news, Logan recently became a big brother! Congrats Deana and Eric, and welcome to your new little one.

Meet Oliver Jones

Meet Oliver Jones

Since I arrived while Dana was finishing up a feeding with Oliver, I had the lucky privilege of exploring their beautiful home with the help of Dana’s husband, Albert. Dana and Albert hail from Tennessee and, trust me, it shows. In everything from the way they answer the phone, greet you, and immediately offer you a drink upon entering their home, that southern hospitality shines right through. And it doesn’t hurt that they have a whole wall in the house dedicated to the King himself! But in all honesty, it makes it feel like there’s a sense of history behind everything they do.

The newest addition to the family history is their son Oliver. As a friend put it, Oliver is the quintessential Gerber baby. I don’t think I’ve ever seen such pristine baby skin (do I seem jealous??? nah!) – so much so that at times I swear the kid was glowing. Couple that with strong blue eyes that, in his newness, just always seem surprised and you have the recipe for a seriously cute kid. This little guy is going to have some crazy game when he gets older.

So without further ado, meet Oliver Jones at 6 months old.

And the whole Jones family. It was a hot, sunny day and I was happy to see that Dana and Albert have a front porch with some pretty perfect lighting.

I saw this rocking chair in Oliver’s room and asked Dana if it would be alright to move it outside. It turns out that this is the same chair Dana’s family had when she was a baby, and they’ve since had it restored. Hearing that just made me feel somehow humbled. History, I tell you!

Yeah, I know. Another feet photo. What can I say? The kid’s got cute feet!

And this, right here? It’s like he’s actually saying to my camera, “Aren’t I an angel?”

Dana suggested that we take some photos outside on a “green couch”. When I discovered what she was talking about, I was so excited by the retro look – and it turns out it doesn’t just look retro, it actually is. It’s the same couch that Dana’s father’s family had when he was growing up in the ’50s, but back then they used it in the basement. Dana and Albert have since reupholstered it with a waterproof fabric so they can use it as an outdoor couch. It’s details like this that make this an even more touching family photo.

Dana and Albert, thank you so much for inviting me into your home and allowing me to document your little one. It was a gift to meet Oliver and witness the sweet interactions of a new family.
